A transfer estimate is not the final degree audit
For an RN returning to study, the useful question is which requirements remain after the receiving institution reviews your record. A general equivalency tool or adviser’s preliminary estimate can help planning; obtain the institution’s formal decision before treating credits as accepted.
Request a written breakdown
- Identify the exact RN-to-BSN pathway and catalog year.
- Ask how to submit official transcripts through the institution’s own system.
- Request separate results for nursing courses, general education, electives and residency requirements.
- Ask about course-age rules, grades, evaluation fees and appeal or reassessment options.
- Use the remaining courses to estimate cost and schedule.
Ohio State’s program information distinguishes its nursing curriculum from additional general education and describes transfer review. Other institutions make their own decisions; this example does not establish a national allowance.
Illustrative example — not a verified program
A preliminary reply says “up to 60 credits.” The final audit has not arrived. Record “up to 60” as an unconfirmed estimate, leave the accepted quantity unknown, and create a task to request the itemized audit.
Draft the question
“Could you provide an individual list of remaining requirements, separating accepted nursing and general education credits from those still under review? Please include the catalog year and any conditions.” Use the comparison workspace to adapt this message; it will not send your transcript or contact details.
