Compare the destination before the timeline
Registered nurses, licensed practical or vocational nurses, and nursing assistants have different education, credentialing, and work responsibilities. The exact activities permitted depend on the jurisdiction and role.
| Role | What to distinguish | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| RN | A licensed registered nursing role; an ADN or BSN is a degree, not the license itself. | Board of nursing and the exact education program. |
| LPN / LVN | Practical or vocational nursing; terminology and permitted practice vary by state. | Board of nursing and approved practical nursing programs. |
| CNA / nursing assistant | A nursing assistant role, not an RN license. State training, competency, and registry rules may apply. | State nurse aide authority or registry and training program. |
Ask about the work you want to do
Read current job descriptions and ask employers about responsibilities, supervision, schedules, and required credentials. A shorter education route may lead to a different role; it is not simply a faster version of the same job.
Questions for a possible bridge program
- Does the program accept your specific current qualification or license?
- How does the school evaluate prior learning and credits?
- Are additional prerequisites required before admission?
- What program approval and graduation requirements apply?
- What will the complete commitment cost, including travel and time away from work?
Use a neutral comparison
Create a separate column for each route: qualification, licensing authority, program requirements, schedule, and cost. Leave missing information blank until the responsible organization confirms it. Do not use a generic national salary or advertised completion time as a promise about your own outcome.
