Become a Nurse

How to become a nurse: map your starting point

Separate nursing roles, education routes, and licensure, then build a shortlist of questions to check with official sources.

Start with the role, then the route

“Nurse” can refer to different licensed roles. Decide whether you are exploring practical/vocational nursing or registered nursing before comparing schools. A degree is an academic qualification; a license is permission to practice under a jurisdiction’s rules. Completing a course does not, by itself, grant that permission.

For registered nursing, education routes can include an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, or an approved diploma program. Your board of nursing is the authority for whether a particular route meets its requirements. The BLS overview is useful for the national picture; it does not decide your individual eligibility.

Make a plan in four steps

  1. Choose a working destination. Identify the state or jurisdiction where you intend to seek a license. Use the NCSBN directory to find the relevant board.
  2. Record your starting point. List completed education and any current license. A non-nursing degree may change which programs you can apply to, but it does not automatically provide nursing credit.
  3. Check programs individually. Ask about approval, admission prerequisites, transfer credit, location requirements, and total costs. Request written answers before committing money.
  4. Separate admission from licensure. An admission offer, graduation, an exam result, and a nursing license are different milestones.

There is no required CNA → LPN → RN ladder

These are different roles and possible routes, not compulsory steps for everyone. Previous work can be valuable, but an employer’s experience requirement and a school’s admission rule are separate questions. Ask what your target program actually requires.

Scope: This is a U.S. education planning guide. International credentials and immigration questions need separate, jurisdiction-specific verification. No route here is a finding of eligibility.
